APPEARANCE: Lorelai isn't what one would describe as breathtaking; she's pretty in a subtle sort of way that one doesn't notice initially. At first glance, she's average, or cute, according to some people. She has large blue-grey eyes, which can be bluer or greyer depending on the day, although they usually settle somewhere in between. Her hair is a sandy shade of blond with touches of red in bright sunlight, and she usually keeps it pulled up or at the very least back, somewhere out of her way.
She has rather distinctive facial features, in that you won't really mistake her for anyone else, or vice-versa. There's a light of intelligence in her eyes that's hard to mistake (although it is sometimes misconstrued as mischief, which is not altogether wrong). She has small hands, which are relatively useful when it comes to reaching into small places or avoiding thorns (which her line of work often requires her to do), a small mouth that seems eternally turned up at the right corner, and a tendency to try to make herself more beautiful with various forms of makeup.
PERSONALITY: Above all else, Lorelai looks out for the best interests of Lorelai. She doesn't take BS from anybody (not anymore, anyhow), and she's not afraid to stand up for herself. She has a tendency to take things a little harder than she needs to, and sees insults where there were none intended. This makes her seem a little snappish sometimes, but she's easy enough to appease when the misunderstanding is taken care of or avoided. Generally speaking, she's not the kind of woman who overreacts to things she actually has all the facts straight on, so she does her best to get those facts before she reacts (although she's human, and these things do happen).
She is incredibly stubborn, and doesn't back down once she's got her mind set on something. That willful streak is what makes her such a terror to argue with, and a frightening force of nature once she's onto something that sets her off. She has a sharp tongue, and is very good at debating topics some people might not even think worth arguing over. She has a sarcastic wit that comes in handy along those lines as well, and isn't afraid to insult people, even if it's just in fun.
That being said, Lorelai is quite aware of the fact that if you dish it out, you have to be willing to take it, too, and she can take it with the best of them. When it comes to banter, well, that's one of the things she and her former husband have in common - their tendency to make snarky remarks when other people seem to be needing a pick-me-up. It's not malicious, it's just the way she chooses to deal with conflict or other unpleasant moodiness.
HISTORY: Lorelai was born the youngest child to a technologically deprived couple in the more civilized region of the mountains of Tennessee. She quickly learned to stand up for herself, being as she was both the youngest and the only girl out of five children. She was picked on by her four brothers, but they were also incredibly protective of her when it came to anyone else, and when she headed off to college, they were highly reluctant to let her out of the house. But Lorelai found her freedom, and found her calling as well - botany, particularly the study of more hostile plants, the ones with the nasty defense mechanisms that other people tried to steer clear of.
She was exceptionally good at the things she was interested in, although she tended to slack off in the things she wasn't. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in botany, and after that, went off to graduate school to pursue her master's in the same subject. It was during that time that she was accepted for an internship in medicinal botany. It was at the medical school at which she participated in that internship that she met Leonard McCoy, the man she would eventually marry (and subsequently divorce).
Lorelai and Leonard were not the most likely couple from the outset; anyone with half a brain could see that putting two sarcastic, snarky people together might not have the best results. But in the end, it was that banter that evolved into flirtation, from flirtation on to relationship, and eventually, they were married. Lorelai's brothers eventually came to accept, respect, and even like Leonard. And for a while, they seemed happy. He finished medical school, while she finished getting her master's degree, and they settled down...for about four years.
With most of their schooling out of the way, Lorelai and Leonard turned their attentions to starting a family, something they talked about at length and eventually decided to do. After about six months of trying only to be disappointed each month, Lorelai finally discovered that she was expecting their first child. For nine months, she behaved herself, took care of herself, did all the things her husband (with his shiny new medical degree) recommended that she do. It seemed like they were on the brink of settling down for good, bringing up children, the things that would cement the permanence of their home life. Five days before their fourth anniversary, Lorelai went into labour. Twenty-seven hours later, it was over - the baby was stillborn. The loss devastated Lorelai, who had finally been ready to give up being the flighty, carefree student she had been in favor of the maturity and dedication of being a mother. With that purpose so swiftly stolen from her, she threw herself into anything she could find to distract her. And in her anxiousness to keep from talking about the child she had lost, she refused to discuss things with Leonard. She put the baby things away into storage, and tried to move on, apparently not realizing that such behaviour could be misconstrued as not caring. But the honest truth was, neither of them were quite the same after that.
From there, it was a swift and painful process, the descent from happy couple to furious opponents. But there came a time when Lorelai realized that the things she had always loved about him, the things that had drawn her to him in the first place, were the exact things that being married to her, that the whole situation had taken away from him. She hated herself for that, hated their relationship for causing it, and hated the fact that she couldn't see anyway around it besides leaving him.
In the end, it wasn't the fact that she didn't love him anymore that made her meet him at the door that day, that made her tell him in no uncertain terms that they needed a divorce, and that nothing he said could change her mind. But from there, the entire situation exploded. The arguments were bitter and angry, the divorce process was painful and drawn-out. The banter that had been so influential in drawing them together became their weapon of choice, the fire with which they fought their battles, and by the end of it, Lorelai had made it her mission to take everything out of his life that she possibly could that would leave any connection between them. She wanted the house, she wanted everything in it, and thanks to her tearful, ever-manipulative ways, the court gave it to her. She never changed her name, though, oddly enough, and in spite of the fact that people questioned her on it frequently, she staunchly refused. If she ever got remarried, she said, then she'd change it.
She didn't know where Leonard went after that; she avoided speaking to him, avoided running into him, and eventually, she heard that he'd left town. Not long after that, a mutual friend told her that he'd gone off and joined Starfleet. That was something she'd never expected. Leonard hated flying. He was terrified of it. Why the hell would he go and join Starfleet? She put it out of her mind for the next three years, but when she heard that he'd been on board the Enterprise during the whole Romulan attack business (which you couldn't even live on Earth without having heard about), something inside her snapped.
She needed to see if he was all right, she needed to know the answers to the questions she had refused to ask for the past few years, and once again, Lorelai's determination proved itself. She applied for a civilian specialist position aboard the Enterprise, a temporary, to-be-extended-if-needed kind of spot, and after a number of rather persistent calls to the people in charge of accepting it, was informed that she'd gotten the job.
