APPEARANCE: Aside from being moderately tall, Embry's physical build is nothing really out of the ordinary, either. He doesn’t work out as a habit, and has only the faintest show of muscles in his upper arms. When it comes to his uses in a fight, he isn’t much for punching, but he’s very fast, and can be quite agile if he needs to dodge a punch, or run away as fast as he can. This comes in handy, particularly considering his tendency to let his temper get the better of him.
He keeps his hair cut relatively short; that is, it’s not long enough to come anywhere near his shoulders, but it’s not razor-cut, either. It brushes against the tops of his ears on the sides when he doesn’t spike it upwards (which he usually does). He has moderately thick eyebrows which are usually raised, one or the other, when he’s contemplating something, confused, amused, or really doesn’t have any other facial expression to make. He also has a single piercing in his left ear, from a summer dare he just couldn’t turn down.
PERSONALITY: Embry can be relatively persuasive when he puts his mind to it. He may be completely lacking in the romance department, but he is undeniably logical and is rather good at winning arguments. His sense of loyalty far outranks his sense of sense of personal safety. Unfortunately, so does his fiery temper. He his horribly deficient in his womanizing skills, and for the life of him, he can't seem to say anything intelligent or impressive when he's trying to woo a girl, and usually ends up making a fool out of himself.
Even if he does end up stammering like an idiot, though, Embry is not afraid to start a conversation. He's confident and outgoing with newcomers (unless they're female), and makes an effort to be the first to introduce himself. When the newcomers are pretty girls, he does his best, but usually ends up saying something stupid. He has a well-developed dry, sarcastic sense of humor which is somewhat influenced by his cynical nature. He is a glass-half-empty sort of person, and while that makes him appear somewhat despondent to many people, it also allows him to make some rather amusing jokes in his reflections on the world.
He loves all things musical and has a keen interest in artistic things; this is complimented by his strong background in physics and mathematics, and his artistic side is the reason he took an interest in holography. He loves creating things, and the day holographic technology catches up with Embry's desire to use it, he may become completely lost to everything else.
HISTORY: The tradition to give the male Austin children middle names taken from the Zodiac was one that went back as far as Embry could trace his ancestry. No one knows anymore who started it, but it's rumored that it has something to do with the fact that, back before contact was actually made with life from other worlds, Embry's ancestors swore that they were abducted by aliens. All Embry knows is that his father was Vincent Capricorn, his older brother is Garrison Aquarius, and he, Embry, had the honor or misfortune, depending on how one looked at it, of being the first in the Austin line to bear the name Ophiuchus, after the thirteenth and greatly disputed sign. It was a contradiction, the keeping of tradition by breaking it, that would, in retrospect, foretell the nature of Embry's life and his very personality.
Embry’s childhood was highly uneventful so far as life-changing events go. He was the middle child, which always left him somewhat ‘stuck’ when it came to getting things. He got his brother Gary's hand-me-downs, not for lack of family funds, but because his mother was always the practical sort who didn’t see anything to gain from buying a new one of something when the old one was still perfectly good. His little sister Marie was lucky enough to be born a girl, so when Embry finished with an article of clothing, it was retired.
He was never the bright child of the family, rebelled when it came to learning to read and write, and contented himself playing games with figurines when his brother and sister were off in their rooms reading books. This disappointed his parents, but they were also understanding and didn’t pressure him into studying more than was necessary. They were, however, intensely relieved when Embry began to take an interest in mathematics, although they were somewhat perplexed by his concurrent fascination with the arts. Baffled by these seemingly opposing sides of his nature, they nonetheless encouraged him in the field of academics he'd finally taken an interest in.
From the time he was very small, it looked as if he was destined to have a bright future in the romance department. He was caught playing “kissing games” with a little girl his age when he was only seven, and after that, always manifested a healthy curiosity in members of the opposite sex. When Embry hit his growth spurt at the end of sixth grade, though, everything changed. He grew very quickly, faster than any of his friends, and his height became something of an embarrassing issue, one that made him a bit self-concious. As it turned out, all of his parents’ fears that he’d become the ultimate player were unfounded. Embry became quite the opposite. While he remained witty and able to converse quite adequately with others, he seemed to be completely inept when it came to talking with girls. This all happened over the summer, of course, and when he returned to school, he was all but abandoned by his old crowd who now saw their champion reduced to nothing more than the common nerd.
At the beginning of high school, Embry, forsaking his former role as the 13-year-old playboy of the eighth grade (who’d never actually managed anything more than sweet-talking girls, but who talked as if he were far more knowledgeable than he was), instead threw himself into the classes he actually found interesting, namely physics and art. As it turned out, he wasn’t a social misfit, just a romantic misfit, and he made new friends besides those who had left him in the cold. He did well in enough classes to average out his grades, and was a relatively good student in that he was well-behaved and didn’t cause trouble. He also proved to be a group leader sort, and developed a desire to join Starfleet when he was seventeen, an ambition he would follow after graduation.
He excelled in optical studies, anything Embry could primarily use his eyes for, he did well in. Engineering was his forté, given his mathematical achievement, but he found mechanical and warp field engineering hopelessly dull, and searched for another outlet. He eventually found it, in holographic engineering. The technology wasn't as advanced as he might have hoped, but since the day Embry graduated from the Academy, he has wanted to study nothing else. He has a slew of little holographic programs he's designed, nothing large, mainly just small objects and little pre-programmed talking heads, but he continues to pursue his interests in holography whenever Scotty's not forcing him to do boring things in engineering.
