A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Being a Cairn, Bird's native language is a form of telepathy using images. Her species had lost the ability to communicate verbally, and thus has no language of her own. Using an artificial voice box, Bird can now communicate verbally, however, it still leaves her incapable of vocal inflection.
This helps her in her position as ambassador, leaving her voice as neutral as her face. She spent her entire life devoted to becoming ambassador, and it quite a good one. This leaves her a bit emotionally handicapped, however, because she has difficulty ever expressing emotion.
Bird is very close to her brother, Dreamwalker. He is not so cunning a linguist as she, but is very adept at entering the metaconcious state of others. However, they were split when he went off to become the first Cairn Starfleet Cadet.
Bird plans to request safe passage aboard the USS Enterprise to her home planet. She is to receive into her care a young child named Blue, who seems the best candidate for the next Ambassador.
Clever Bird is on the look out for a possible husband. She recognizes the need for a strategic match between herself, as the representative of her people, and another. Her criteria will not be based on emotion, but certainly it might lead her astray.
