PERSONAL - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
APPEARANCE: Despite being a Human/Vulcan Hybrid, Abigail appears completely human lacking the traditional pointed ears and high arched brows. She possesses none of the traditional markings or traits of a Vulcan (exterior wise), with the exceptions of her internal physiology and mental capacity.
Abigail has very short dark brown hair, which she keeps short most, if not all of the time, and brown eyes, with fair, Caucasian skin. Compared to her family, she most sincerely resembles her mother, with the exceptions of her hair and eyes which appear like that of her Vulcan father.
She stands at an above-average height of around 5'11" and her build is also very average, at least in a human capacity. But she does work out frequently in order to maintain her conditioning and stamina.
She typically wears human attire, except when she is in that of her Starfleet Uniform, considering it is the culture that she has been immersed in the most and has been forced to adapt to, despite her obvious “uniqueness.” She prefers tighter fitting clothing, but dresses considerably modest when in civilian attire.
PERSONALITY: A Vulcan in a human shell; that’s how most people refer to Abigail when they come to realize she is, in actuality, a Hybrid, of both Human and Vulcan race. Since being completely immersed in human culture at the age of 2, Abby has locked herself away internally, forbidding herself to allow her human emotions to play any kind of role in her life because of the bad experiences that were brought with being a “unique” being in a world that doesn’t completely understand her. Her tendency to ignore her obvious humanity, has left her at odds with many people throughout the years, especially her instructors and classmates in school. Therefore, she can be considered cold in nature, much like her Vulcan counterparts. She holds herself high in respects, feeling that, more often than not, she is, in fact, the Vulcan trapped within the shell of a human that everyone sees her as.
She can be standoffish towards others, and at times, her emotions get the best of her, especially if she feels threatened in the least. Abigail also feels some resentment towards both humans and Vulcans because of the way she has been treated by both parties through the course of her life. But she has, nonetheless, learned to cope with all sentient beings that she is exposed with within the hallowed halls of Starfleet. She tries to treat everyone with respect, even if they see her differently. But she hasn’t lost all of her human nature, and if one were to get close to her, they’d find she has a very relaxed demeanor and sometimes, in rare moments, she smiles and laughs.
Around others, especially in work scenarios, she is very devoted to her job and doing it to the best of her ability. She is a more or less a perfectionist, and thus, expects nothing more than perfection from those around her with whom she’s working with. Work is the one of the few places where she feels comfortable interacting with others, because it is the one place where she fits in with people who understands the things she likes to do.
She isn’t a social butterfly, and would rather spend her free times meditating or studying Intergalactic History and Star Charts and reading old Earth and Vulcan readings, than visiting a bar and wasting time that could be better used elsewhere. She’s very fond of Shakespeare and old novels, something she inherited from her mother.
Since her father’s death with Vulcan, Abigail has become even more closed off to the world, while she stands at a crossroads, unsure about her place in the galaxy and who she is and is suppose to be any more. Having lost his guidance and insight, Abby looks to focusing on her career, in hopes that the stars will guide her to whatever her future and destiny hold.
HISTORY: Abigail T’Les Carter was born on Vulcan to her Vulcan historian father Surusk, and her human, German-born historian Mother, Antonia Carter. Because of her father’s subsequent marriage to a non-Vulcan, he was disowned from the rest of his family, and his budding teaching career at the Vulcan Science Institute was also cut short. At the insistence of Surusk, she was given a human name, despite her mother’s intent on having her raised on Vulcan with a Vulcan name. A compromise was reached, and her Vulcan name now is that of her human “middle” name.
For the first two years of her life, Abby and her parents remained on Vulcan in hopes that her non-Vulcan appearance would be something that she would grow out of, and the sooner than later she would be able to rightly take her place among Vulcan peers. But at the insistence of her mother, and at the realization that no matter how increasingly intelligent she was, she would never truly fit in on the planet, they relocated back to San Francisco where Antonia had a History Teaching job waiting for her back at Starfleet.
It was obvious that Abby had developed, at least mentally, far more of the Vulcan physiology than that of a human. She learned at an extreme rate and was quickly moved through human schooling. Throughout her time in human school, which was far more accelerated than anyone could have intended, she was the focal point for both bully’s and curious classmates alike. This led to her further and more persistence insistence of learning about her Vulcan, and emotionless, half. The part that no one could truly see, or were too ignorant to view.
When she was 8, her father, upon recommendation from her mother and several other friends of their family, began teaching Vulcan history at Starfleet Academy, affording him the access to the technology that would allow Abigail to study in a more private environment and to her personal skill level. She tested out of regular studies at 15, and was thereupon accepted to Starfleet Academy.
At Starfleet, Abigail began to attempt to immerse herself within all that it had to offer. She felt far more comfortable with her peers there, than any time before. She initially began to study Galactic History, in hopes that she, like both of her parents, might become a historian for the Fleet. But an uncanny professor, one that she had butted heads many times with, would be the one to spark her focus to Cartography and mapping the heavens. She graduated, near the top of her class several years later, an official Stellar Cartographer, on the fast track to hopefully, becoming a Junior Science Officer.
With Nero’s attack on Vulcan, Abigail was left grief-stricken and subsequently quieted with the learning that her father, her closest mentor and friend as well as the one person that ever truly understood her, was dead. She quickly fell deep into meditation, ignoring the work around her, becoming subsequently far more distracted, and unable to verbalize or express her feelings to even her own mother, let alone her peers around her. Her mother, deeply concerned with her irrational behavior, insisted to her superiors that she be evaluated before being assigned to an active position. At the beckoning of those around her, she left San Francisco for the quiet and ultimate solitude of her mother’s birth country, Germany.
After a short leave of absence, in order to resolve the confusing state that plagued at her, and to give her time to mourn her loss with Antonia, Abigail has received a pass clearance from her superiors and has received assignment to the USS Enterprise, while her mother returned to her position at the Academy. She hopes that a new job will allow her to refocus herself, as well as furthering her budding career with Starfleet.
OUT OF CHARACTER - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
NAME/ALIAS: Victoria HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN RPING: For a long time actually, which may or may not be a good thing, if I had kept track, I'd tell you. But I can tell you it was a Star Trek RP on MSN Chats back in the day, if that helps. WHERE DID YOU FIND US: I was randomly googling for something new to RP and found this place by chance DID YOU READ THE RULES: pilgrim RP SAMPLE: She stuttered awake, her forehead and face mired in perspiration. Running a hand over her face, Abigail sat up from her bed, breathing in deeply the air of her quarters. “Computer, lights.” The lights blasted, attacking her pupils with sincere force. “Abbs are you ok?” A pair of bright blue orbs, from that of her Starfleet Academy roommate Cecilia, hovered over her ominously.
“Fine,” she managed, “Fine.” It was their first night back on the surface after being returned from their temporary assignment outside of the Academy. In all true actuality, she probably was nowhere near the human definition of fine, but it would suffice as an excuse to send the woman back to her sleep. Running a hand through her short hair, she sighed. "My apologies for waking you Cecilia.”
“It’s ok Abby,” she stated quietly, the obvious concern in her voice evident. “Must have been some nightmare.” Abigail looked around, standing to her feet and rummaging to her closet for a fresh set of clothes.
“I require some fresh air; I’ll be back in a little while.” The blonde narrowly nodded as she moved into the fresher and changed, disappearing out of their quarters and down the lingering hallway. It was late, indeed far later than any student should have been walking around. In all truth, she wasn’t a student any longer, but she was instead waiting for assignment. Her superiors had decided that she required further evaluation before being assigned to her first official position. The chaos that the destruction of Vulcan and its subsequent ramifications ran far and wide through the roots of Starfleet; in an essence, it also ran deeply through herself. Apparently in the eyes of her Officer in Charge, the loss of a parent was something that deemed you a risk. Perhaps that as well as appearing completely human but being half-Vulcan had something to do with it. Nonetheless, she was being treated as an inferior in her opinion. Not that it was anything new.
Finding a bench, somewhere along one of the sprawling lawns, she sat down, breathing in the fresh night air. She pulled her comm from her pocket, and quietly tapped it, waiting for a signal. “Hmm....Abigail.”
“Mother...I must apologize, it is very...”
“Shh sweetie, it’s ok. Don’t worry about it.” The woman’s voice was soothing, something she desperately needed. The exhaustion in the lines of her mother’s face brought some hint of sorrow within her. “You couldn’t sleep?” She shook her head, her eyes trailing across the screen. “Me either. Have you received your assignment yet?”
“Not yet. I must...” she took another deep breath, a wince of guilt entering into her voice“...I must undergo an evaluation based on a request from my superiors. They believe I have been acting...erratic, in nature.” A soft touch of sorrow crossed her mother’s lips.
“He was your father, and how he was taken was more than unfair Abby. Everyone deserves time to mourn, and everyone does it in their own way. You are...unique. It is to be expected.”
“Vulcan was destroyed...I should have been there with him. Instead, I was...selfish...I chose to remain at my position in…”
“And what? Been killed with him? I understand Vulcan tradition probably far better than most humans, so you must see that you aren’t thinking rationally yourself.” Her mother was pleading with her; it was evident in the strain in her voice and her gestures. “You must remember Abby, never forget everything that he...and I, have instilled in you. Something kept you alive, which must mean that your destiny wasn’t to be on Vulcan. For which I am thankful. I’d rather not be mourning the loss of my entire family.”
“I am sorry to have bothered you mother.”
“You do not bother me Abigail. I’m always here for you...if you ever need to get away.”
“I know where to find you.” The signal ended more abruptly than she'd intended, a lack of goodbye seeming rude...but it was nearly 2 am. She leaned back on the bench, staring up at what she could see of the starry sky. Her fingers traced the star line, echoing a path she’d been on before. But where a Planet should have been, she knew there was nothing more than emptiness. Perhaps it had been her destiny not to have been on Vulcan, but of late, she wasn’t sure what her destiny or her fate was. Confusion wasn’t something she particularly enjoyed, but it simply reiterated what she was...Human...Human and Vulcan, a conflicting tide that she had warred through her entire life. And now the only Vulcan that had ever understood her, and accepted her for who she was, was gone...along with billions of others like him. She had her mother of course...but it was different, their relationship was different. Everything was different now. At least she knew, to a point, she wasn’t alone, no matter how she felt in the here and now.
