ZURI t'VREEK
BASICS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
FULL NAME: Zuri t'Vreek. RACE: Half-Romulan {see signature for physical proof ;D} AGE: 18 GENDER: Female HEIGHT: 5'4 {though Romulans as a species are generally rather large and strong, due to her human ancestry, she ended up on the smallish side, about two inches smaller than the average Romulan female} WEIGHT: Around 125 lbs BIRTHPLACE: Somewhere on the planet Remus, though raised on Romulus.
EXPERIENCE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
STARFLEET GRADUATE: Not yet. STARFLEET RANK: Cadet MEDICAL RANK: -- STUDIES: Ethnology, Linguistics, Xenology, Xenolinguistics, Psychology DIVISION: Cadet JOB TITLE: Student OTHER: --
STRENGTHS:
- Intelligent {being half Romulan, she is naturally quite intelligent, though not quite as disciplined and focused on her studies as full Romulans her age.}
- Clever and innovative {ideas come easily to her, and she has a very creative side that she will often let show in her daily life.}
- Skilled {Zuri has a deep fascination for other cultures and languages, likely stemming from being a child of two different species and cultures herself. She spent a large part of her childhood teaching herself bits and pieces of various alien and human languages and learning as much about other cultures as she could, including the internal psychology of the people within them. Because of this, she is strong in linguistics alien and human alike, as well as generally knowledgeable of the bigger pictures-- IE, what exists around her.}
- Persuasive
- Reliable {being raised in a strict society that places great importance on uniform behavior and general promptness at all times, reliability is one thing you can count on Zuri for. If she gives you her word, it is truly difficult for her to go back on it, even out of anger or contempt.}
WEAKNESSES:
- Disinterested {tends to seem rather unsympathetic to others' problems or feelings, often speaking with sarcasm or rolling her eyes in response instead of taking things seriously.}
- Judgemental {not intentionally, but.. hey, Romulans certainly aren't the most accepting of beings.}
- Sensitive, self conscious {she tries to keep this to herself as much as she can}
- Stubborn
- Easily loses focus or becomes distracted
PERSONAL - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
APPEARANCE: Zuri's most noticeable physical trait would, of course, have to be her naturally erect ears, which she tends to sort of spite a little bit due to what they represent on her, but in their actual physical appearance have kind of sort of a teensy bit grown on her over the years. They're kind of... quirky. {But you'd never hear her admitting that.}
She has a dark, somewhat defined brow bone which is not quite as prominent or pokey-outey as her full-species relatives, but it is definitely there. She rather dislikes it, thinking it makes her look ridiculous, so she tries to keep her bangs to a length that will thoroughly mask it.
She doesn't exactly love the Romulan fashion sense either, finding the stereotypical square-shouldered, staid, uniform look to be a little bit behind the times and, to put it plainly, stupid and boxy. Her body is not shaped like a box, so why should it have to look like one? Against the wishes of her guardians, she prefers to dress in more human-esque attire which flatter her form a bit more and present a bit nicer of a color palette than the beyond-overdone grey-and-green look they so cherish.
PERSONALITY: Much of Zuri's personality stems from the way she was raised, and the way in which that Romulan upbringing conflicts with the human half of her. The first impression one might get from her would likely assume her thick-skinned and truthfully, a bit less than approachable. This is understandable given that traits like sarcasm come quite easily to her, though she's not necessarily unfriendly, especially once you get to know her. While it's not as though Zuri doesn't care about others-- she is very much an emotional being, after all-- she's simply overly used to being among the constant dramatics that make up the Romulan people. With them, everything is taken with such emphasis and passion and vigor that over time, for the half-human girl, it simply became predictable... and truthfully, rather exasperating at times. Because of this, she can come off as somewhat disinterested or insensitive, rolling her eyes, using sarcasm, and just not taking the situations and problems of others as seriously as they might like her to. She's just kind of sick of dramatics in general, even though, looking at it from another side, it is exactly that passionate nature that causes her to be so deeply invested in her cultural and psychological studies.
This stride with which she lives carries further through her social surroundings and the way in which she interacts with her peers. She is intelligent and she definitely knows it, especially around her fellow Starfleet students, where she generally holds rank towards the top of her class and is frequently plagued by wonder as to how certain classmates of hers even managed to reach the level of schooling at which they reside. Romulan nature is to be cunning and gain power where they can, acting on opportunity, and using emotion to their advantage. Being raised in this society has taught Zuri the art of persuasion, how to maximize on her surroundings, and ultimately gain from it. Though she does use this skill, she does so with a slightly different motive; not so much to gain anything, power or otherwise, but usually for more minor triumphs such as convincing the irritating little blonde in her Psychology lecture that some unknown alien starship blew up Mercury last night. ;]
When you get right down to it, however, Zuri's actions could easily be called a front, at least partly, used to cover up the emotional nature that lies within. Though she does a good job not showing it, she is really quite sensitive and even self-conscious, especially among the students at Starfleet Academy. Though her features are much less defined than a full Romulan, and logically she knows that most of her peers probably can't immediately discern between a Romulan and a Vulcan, if at all, unless informed, she still cannot help but feel the judgmental eyes burning into her as she walks by, ears pointing incriminatingly for the world to see. There are days that she truly wishes she might have instead been born of Vulcan blood... what good did such over-emotion ever do for anyone, anyway?
HISTORY: A long time ago, a Romulan man and a human woman joined together and created a little girl between them, naming her after her Romulan grandmother as well as, subtly, her human grandmother. This is one of the only things Zuri Sophia t'Vreek knows for sure about her birth parents and, consequentially, her own biological history. Born in darkness in an uninhabited area of the neighboring planet Remus, the baby girl was beloved by her parents and the intention was that they would leave the aggressive, antagonistic planet as a family and create a peaceful life for themselves, perhaps on Earth or somewhere with less animosity surrounding everything. However, they never quite made it that far-- Zuri's mother was killed by a Romulan guard, thinking the human woman a spy-- and accusing Zuri's father of helping her.
For her father's fear that something might happen to his baby daughter, Zuri ultimately ended up under the care of her father's sister and her husband, who had been unable to have children themselves. Thus, they took in Zuri as one of their own, determined to raise her in a "proper Romulan fashion." They raised her with Romulan morals and values as best they could, but as she grew older, Zuri found that her human ancestry proved itself very difficult to ignore. She didn't have the firm, structured, aggressive nature that her relatives took for granted, and more and more she found herself pulling away from what was expected of her. She was unhappy with her surroundings, rebelling in many ways where she found opportunity, being able to recite her uncle's stern lectures right along with him, her eyes rolling exasperatedly all the while.
She found the expectations of her to be overwhelming, and when she became of age, she squeezed her eyes shut, held her breath, and requested to attend Starfleet Academy rather than the Romulan higher educational alternative, feeling that she would inevitably find it easier to fit in there, and ultimately more bearable. She was, of course, uproariously refused this by her uncle who hated the federation and everything it stood for, so one night, as only a half-human, half-Romulan likely could, she managed to sneak out and hopped the next pod to Earth. Aaaand.. here she is. :D
[Note: if this is implausible in any way, please let me know? I tried to do as much Romulan research as I could, but I had a tiny bit of difficulty deciding how strict the Roms actually were, regarding humans. So. Yes. I apologize if I overlooked something really retarded, haha.]
