as did an ambitious Jean-Luc Picard years later.
Picard's captaincy led the Federation to a number of
milestones, including first contact with the Borg. But
that particular milestone didn't turn out quite as it was
meant to...it ended with the assimilation of Picard
himself, into a uniquely intelligent and self-aware Borg
named Locutus.
Picard's crew, assuming him dead, returned to port with
little information on this new threat. Life in the Federation
went on, and events played out much as they had in
the original reality. The Federation formed a treaty with
the Cardassian Union, a treaty that ceded a number of
Federation colonized worlds to the Cardassians. That in
turn provoked the formation of the Maquis, a group that
began as a resistance to Cardassian control of the worlds
they had worked to colonize.
There were Maquis supporters within the Federation to
be sure, but no official help could be given under the
terms of the treaty. The Maquis were officially designated
as criminals by both the Federation and the Cardassians.
The USS Voyager was deployed to apprehend a
particularly troublesome Maquis ship captained by the
renegade Chakotay. The arrest went as well as could be
expected, and Voyager was en route back to earth
when they received a communication that changed everything.
Under the guidance of the unholy alliance of Locutus and
the Borg queen, the Borg had moved swiftly toward the
Alpha Quadrant, and during Voyager's absence,
most of the fleet, as well as Earth itself, had been assimilated.
The last message received from Starfleet Command was a
warning to avoid Earth at all costs. Voyager, her cargo
of prisoners and captured ship in tow, moved into the Badlands
in an attempt to avoid Borg detection and buy a little time in
which Captain Janeway hoped to formulate a course of action.
Then a wave of light came, an instantaneous transportation...
and Voyager's crew and the Maquis all found themselves
a lifetime from home, somewhere in the Delta Quadrant.
