SARABETH MORINI
BASICS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
FULL NAME: Sarabeth Alessandra Morini (Beth to her friends) RACE: 7/8 Human, 1/8 Betazoid AGE: 21 GENDER: Female HEIGHT: 5'7" WEIGHT: 130 pounds BIRTHPLACE: Earth, West Texas (think El Paso)
EXPERIENCE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
STARFLEET GRADUATE: Yes STARFLEET RANK: Ensign MEDICAL RANK: None STUDIES: Security and related studies, also Linguistics DIVISION: Operations JOB TITLE: Security OTHER: Princess! (No, I'm just kidding, she doesn't have any other titles)
STRENGTHS: Dancing: So how is dancing a strength? Well, there are a number of things. First of all, it keeps her agile and quick on her feet, which also makes her physically able to dodge and get around things. It also keeps her flexible, so she can bend herself in and out of tough physical situations (like trying to squeeze through a door). It keeps her physically fit, so she's strong (not superstrong, she can't take down a Vulcan or nothing, but she would be seen as a little 'above-average' strong for a woman). Dancing keeps her reflexes up. And, finally, dancing helps her with her confidence issues - she feels more confidence during and after a good hard dance.
Taciturn: Keeping quiet is a far greater strength than Sarabeth knows, really. Her quiet personality often can make people forget she's in a room, or assume that she is of no threat for any reason. 'She never talks, so why would she talk now?' so to speak. This means that Sarabeth is quite good at hearing things she's not supposed to, usually because people assume she would never harm a fly or tell a lie (or a secret). This is - for the most part - true...but sometimes if she hears something grave, she'll remember that she is a Starfleet Officer...and a Security one to boot.
Betazoid Empathy: Sarabeth knows her great-grandmother was Betazoid, but she doesn't really realize that she has some of the powers her great-grandmother did. Which is not that important because she really doesn't have that much. What she has makes her an incredibly good people-reader. She can usually tell how someone is feeling - she thinks it's a gut instinct, but it's really the power. After she picks up on the feeling, it's her job to figure out how to react to it. Sometimes she gets it right. Sometimes she gets it wrong...
Curiosity: This is a powerful strength of Sarabeth's because it ultimately drives her. She doesn't quite have the 'wanderlust', but she does have an insatiable curiosity to learn all sorts of new things and experience all sorts of new things. This curiosity drives her to seek out solutions to problems and answers to questions, which makes her all the more driven, determined, motivated, and an all-around solid team player.
Intelligence: While this one might be linked to 'curiosity', the simple fact is that Sarabeth has read a lot, both fiction and non-fiction, old and new books. (For example, she loves to read Jane Austen as well as Sonak). She has gained a lot of intelligence - for example, she speaks three Earth languages fluently, (French, Italian, Japanese), and two alien languages on a conversational level (Vulcan and Andorian). She also can apply things she has read in books to real life (oh I read about this, this is what they did, why don't we try this?) I don't mean she is a walking encyclopedia or she is a computer that is never wrong, but she is very educated.
WEAKNESSES: Emotion: Oh, I can hear Spock cheering...or would he be cheering...for this one. Sarabeth is very emotionally mature - she won't run out of a room crying like a four year old or anything. But like many emotional creatures - women, Betazoids, etc - there are times when her emotion can rule her. This is part of why she chose never to go into Command - there are times, very often in fact, when she cannot separate the logical choice from the emotional choice. In other words, it's very hard for her to think with her head and not her heart. This often makes her hesitate, and can sometimes mean that she is easily manipulated. She also can have strong emotional reactions around certain things - for example, when she's heavily embarrassed, she'll shake uncontrollably, as Chekov knows.
Doubt: Sarabeth joined Starfleet at the urging of her best friend. While she doesn't doubt Starfleet, she often doubts her job and her ability to do it. She is aware of her weaknesses as an emotional being, and sometimes lacks confidence in herself and her abilities to do what is right and not what she feels is right. In other words, she's not sure if she's in the right area of Starfleet work. It is a problem that is beginning to consume her, and she is nearing a choice about it.
Indeterminate Direction: This ties mildly into Doubt, as Sarabeth does not truly know what she wants to do with her life. She wants to stay with Security because she feels like it will make her a better person, but her old passion of dancing pulls at her, and the simple fact that she is good at diplomacy and languages suggest that she could try for a diplomatic approach to Starfleet instead of the guns of it. This makes her often conflicted and confused for no apparent reason because she has not quite determined her purpose in life. In short, she is where she wants to be, but she's not sure if she is what she wants to be.
Overthinking: In an attempt to compensate for her emotional weaknesses, Sarabeth can sometimes try to overcompensate in a situation and overthink things to a wild degree. She can figuratively bring herself to a stalemate if the situation is dire and not be able to move forward with a plan of action, even if she came up with it herself. She usually requires someone to boot her in the butt at that time, and tell her to trust her instincts and the people around her.
In your face: Sarabeth may be a security officer, but she is probably best known as the sniper type. While she's darn good with a ranged weapon, when the fight gets up close and personal she has real trouble going through with it. She can become distracted, emotional, lose focus, and forget her training when she sees the eyes of the person because suddenly they're real, and she has to hurt them or subdue them, which is something she finds hard to do.
PERSONAL - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
APPEARANCE: Point for point, Sarabeth is just a very pretty girl. She's not drop dead gorgeous (though she can be described as such with the right combination of make up and clothes), but she has a natural beauty to her that is often accentuated by her shyness. She doesn't often wear makeup and ties her wavy, dark brown hair back into either a ponytail or lets it fall around her shoulders. Her soft face, wide, smiling mouth, and deep brown expressive eyes come from her father's Italian heritage. She has a long neck, small hands, and a curvaceous figure. She has a straight, average nose and C-cups. She often wears her uniform, which is a red minidress, but when she's off-duty she will wear bodysuits and leggings or pants and a shirt, depending on how much she wants to hide or not. She tends to wear white, gold, black, and red, but sometimes she'll throw in some blue or green if she's on shore leave. And - very occasionally - you'll see her in her favorite dress - a beautiful golden midthigh sleeveless number.
PERSONALITY: Sarabeth is a quiet type, which is a little odd for a Security Officer, but at the same time it makes sense because she is prone to make little noise (except when she does...explained later). She has a small group of friends that she eagerly talks to and opens up to, but around new people she is the shy, quiet one. She has a dry wit that will come out at times, and around guys she likes she gets very nervous. When she gets angry, her eyes can toss off sparks (not literally, figuratively), and she will fight like a cat to protect those around her. She is deeply compassionate and kind to people who are nice to her. As to the making noise suggested earlier - Sarabeth is normally a graceful, gentle person. But sometimes she can be a real klutz! She'll trip over her own feet, run into walls, anything, and sometimes at the worst possible moments. When that happens, she often becomes very embarrassed and shut off.
Sarabeth did not train to be a counselor, but she does have an aura or feeling about her that makes those around her trust her. I don't mean like a power or hypnotism or anything...she just gives off the impression that she is someone who can be trusted, who will keep secrets, and who can help if need be. Which she is. A quiet girl, she has spent much time watching people and can deduce the emotional aspects of a situation quite well. She is a good - amateur - psychologist.
HISTORY: Sarabeth was born the second child to Nicolas and Monique Morini, a pair of desert-dwelling dreamers in the Sacramento mountains near El Paso, Texas. The pair had actually not planned on having any more children, but one passionate night produced the little Sarabeth and neither of her parents were willing to give her up. Sarabeth's older sister, Alicia, had gone through seven years of moving from place to place when Nicolas was in the Air Force. Sarabeth had quite a different childhood - growing up in one single place on the family's small bit of land in the mountain foothills. Monique had gone from being an elementary school teacher on bases to making jewelry with the minerals and ores that Texas and south New Mexico had to offer, and Nicolas had gone from being a very well-paid fighter pilot to a mechanic. As a result, the family kept a steady income, and Sarabeth and Alicia grew up as middle-class citizens.
Sarabeth and Alicia were night and day different though. Whereas Alicia had the golden-brown hair and green eyes (not to mention the bubbly, chatty personality) of her mother, Sarabeth had the deep silence and dark complexion of her father. Her mother constantly blamed it on the tranquil but crisp mountain air, which would make Sarabeth and Nicolas look at each other and smile, but the fact remained that Sarabeth grew up a quiet and studious child, always more interested in studying than playing in the dirt. Alicia was constantly confused as to why Sarabeth never really wanted to play with her, but Sarabeth couldn't understand why Alicia would want to be running around in the mud when there was a perfectly good unread book on the bookshelf. It made the two of them face off for a couple years until puberty hit Alicia (which meant dirt=evil and makeup=God). After that, Sarabeth could read and learn all she wanted - and she did. Sometimes, though, she would get bored of reading and want to go out and run around. As a child, she had boundless energy. Usually she could channel that into reading but sometimes...anyway, Sarabeth asked her mother if she could take classes in something that required movement. She had tried soccer and just didn't like it. She liked riding the family horses, but that was more of a pastime to think than actively engage in riding.
So, her mother got her into dance. And Sarabeth took to it like a duck to water. The fun part was, there wasn't a single dance that didn't thrill her. She loved the technicalities of tap, the grace of ballet, the downright funkiness of jazz. As she grew older, she loved the challenge of the paso doble, the passion of the tango, the simplicity of the waltz. She wasn't a master at any of them, but she loved them all. She got to where she would spend hours practicing step after step. The dancing helped her as she began to hit puberty too - keeping her fit and agile; she curved in lovely areas. Of course, she didn't stop reading - her curiosity about the world around her grew and she began to explore as well. She loved watching thunderstorms and seeing how people reacted to each other and following around aliens to see how they treated other people. In general, Sarabeth became a dancing explorer. The only awful thing was that it was a very solo life. She couldn't find anyone who was as curious as her, and so she often went off alone to do her own things. She had some friends growing up, but as their interests went towards makeup and boys and Sarabeth's went towards dancing and spotlights, they drifted apart.
Around the age of sixteen, finally, Sarabeth began to slow down. She was pretty sure that she wanted to be a professional dancer or dance teacher for her life. Her curiosity on the world around her had started to fade as she accepted that being a dancer would also mean lots of traveling, so she would get to see more places. But life has a funny way of throwing curve balls, and sometimes your dance partner gets injured the night before a competition. In Sarabeth's case, her life changed when her sister got married. Alicia had lost her heart to a smart, funny, ambitious cadet bound on commanding a starship one day. The cadet, full of stories and sparkle, charmed the entire Morini family. But most of all, he turned Sarabeth Morini's world entirely on its head. She didn't fall in love with him - nothing so dramatic. But he spoke of the stars with the same passion that she spoke of her dancing. And somewhere along the line, Sarabeth realized that while her passion for dancing was indeed a passion - that was all it was. It was a hobby she had gotten into as a child that could have become a career. Except when she thought about it, she realized she didn't want to confine herself to the Earth for her life, even if it was purely for dancing. The world - the stars - had so much to offer her. Why shouldn't she try to give something back while seeing what else was out there?
Her mind turned to Starfleet. She didn't know what she, as a dancer, could offer them, but she knew she spoke several languages, that she was good at dissolving conflicts, that she was physically fit and brimming with energy. There had to be something she could do for the new world of exploration. Enter now a young Andorian girl named Tiaret. Tiaret, being an aggressive but outgoing Andorian, took to Sarabeth instantly, noticing the girl's quiet composure belied a naivete that needed a little shaking up. Tiaret's tenacity and tendency to talk forced Sarabeth out of her shell more than once, and more than once Sarabeth found herself mediating conflicts and even going so far as to preventing someone from attacking her bold friend. It was Tiaret who suggested Security to Sarabeth. At first, Sarabeth rejected the idea, saying she was made for dissolving conflicts instead of making them worse. But Tiaret - and the rest of the world - had a point. Starfleet ships went out with phasers, torpedoes, and shields. Nicolas had flown a plane in wars. The world itself had been at war multiple times. As Tiaret put it: "Diplomacy can fail. Phasers might fail, but they'll stop things a lot more effectively."
Sarabeth could not argue, and since she wanted to 'give back' to the world, do something for the good of the future and not just for herself - Security it became.
And as it turned out, she enjoyed it. A lot. The rules and order blending with the flexibility of courses and abilities - she fell into place easily. At Starfleet Academy, she roomed with Tiaret again (the aggressive Andorian eagerly joining Security ranks as well), and her circle of friends began to extend. As did her romantic interests. She dated a few times, and of course there was the one she never had the courage to ask out...which will be even more of a challenge now because she's on the same ship as him!! But in the end, she began to find a middle ground when it came to socialization.
Now, Sarabeth is an ensign on the Enterprise, assigned to a security team. I suppose this would make her a 'redshirt' - but she's not going to die on the first mission she goes on!!
OUT OF CHARACTER - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
NAME/ALIAS: Sarabeth HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN RPING: 3 years WHERE DID YOU FIND US: RPG-D RP SAMPLE:
Tiaret bounced on Sarabeth’s bed, the oddly human pastime taking a solid root in the Andorian’s mental book of ‘fun’. Sarabeth, for her part, tilted her head and moved her liquid eyes to the window, looking out at the city below, the sky above, and the future in the distance.
Security. Really, in all her time growing up, she had never once even considered the life of a law enforcement officer. Seeing what those poor souls in New York had to go through every day, Sarabeth had become bound and determined never to cause trouble for them. But now, at this moment, her aggressive Andorian friend had woken her up to the simple fact that, despite the troubles, security did line up with a lot of things that Sarabeth loved to do. She was highly protective of both herself and her friends. She was a physical being, loving to move and dance and train and keep in shape. She was a mental being, loving to learn and read and study and apply. So why, indeed, did she need to spend her life sitting at a computer typing in commands, or strictly on the stage, living in the lights but nothing more?
”You’re thinking about it.”
It wasn’t a question, and Sarabeth looked back at Tiaret with a bright smile. ”It’s only logical,” she quipped in a deeper voice, making Tiaret’s antennae twitch with laughter at her rather lame but nonetheless funny impersonation of their Vulcan career advisor. ”But,” she added in her normal, musical tone, ”I’m not sure I can. I mean don’t you have to become emotionless? It’s a world I know nothing about, and you’re suggesting I make it my life?”
”It’s your choice, Beth. It’s a challenge. It’s something you know nothing about, something you have to learn and study and train to become. And you won’t be protecting peons in New York City. You’ll be on a starship, in firefights, saving people. You won’t just experience the world, you’ll experience the universe. And...if you truly hate it...well you can always just be another dancer or another teacher. The home front is just as important as the front lines.”
Leave it to Tiaret to describe a career choice as a war decision. Sarabeth smiled. ”I’m not ready to make my choice yet. But I will definitely think about it. How about that?”
”That was the idea.”

A FEW CHANGES Could you put her first and last name up on the top of your application where it says FIRST AND LAST NAME above the picture. And the picture is stretching the board so could you resize or find a smaller one? And I think a security officer's intelligence wouldn't be as high as a doctor or whatever. Perhaps a 5 with that one and speed would be a 5 or 6 too. Feel free to argue with me about this.
