APPEARANCE: Hikaru Sulu is at first glance a very average looking man. Instantly, one can assume he is of Asian heritage since his features are that of a Japanese-American. He has deep brown eyes and jet black hair. Although he seems to be comfortable with his appearance, there are instances where he will tug on a sleeve or run a hand through his hair for good measure. At his post and on duty, Sulu wears his yellow Starfleet-issued command uniform. The outfit is polished off with black pants, boots, and a black undershirt. When he's off duty, he wears plain t-shirts and black pants. Nothing too ritzy that would easily stand out.
PERSONALITY: Sulu is a personable human being. He's easy to approach and he is usually in a pleasant mood. As the pilot of the ship, he is used to taking orders from people and isn't the disobedient type. His stance on certain subjects usually aligns with whoever he trusts the most and he will always back up a true friend. When things are getting out of control, he's the voice of reason - he tries to understand things from both sides of a conflict and will suggest a solution that would be a benefit to both factions. Optimism and light-hearted humor are his forte.
Occasionally, there are times when he will become angry. He doesn't outright inflict his rage upon anyone though. Rather, he suppresses his feelings and tries to deal with things by taking a break and letting his emotions smooth-over. The only time he truly demonstrates any kind of unbridled animosity is when he is engaged in swordplay. The adrenaline rush provides him with the dexterity he needs to succeed in combat.
HISTORY: Hikaru Sulu was born in San Francisco, California in the year 2237. His family had emigrated to the United States from Japan a few years before his birth. He was an only child and had a fairly normal childhood. As a young boy, he expressed extreme interest in starships and aeroplanes and would often play make believe with his friends. His father, Akira Sulu, was a professor at a university who taught a physics class. Because of this, the young Hikaru grew up with plenty knowledge about how things worked and the physics behind flying.
When he was old enough, he enlisted in Starfleet Academy to study Aerosciences. Since his family's origins were from that of an ancient imperial Samurai family, he'd been taught swordplay from his grandfather (who still believed somewhat in the teachings of the blade). He also took it upon himself to learn fencing with an epee and basic swordplay with a longsword of old English origins. Because of his vast knowledge in the area, Sulu eventually founded the Starfleet Academy's European Swordsmanship club where he was the president. The club met every week and they had monthly exhibitions that other cadets could come to view.
Whenthe distress call from Vulcan forced all of the cadets to be assigned to ships, Sulu was stationed on Starfleet's newest ship, the U.S.S. Enterprise. Originally, he'd been one of the ship's senior officers of the astrosciences department. In a sudden change of events, the helmsman, McKenna, had fallen ill the night before. Because of this, Sulu was reassigned as the ship's helmsman. Since it was technically his first time flying a ship outside of simulations, he had a little trouble getting the starship into warp (Spock had to tell him to turn off the external inertial dampener). After that, it was smooth sailing.
It was soon revealed that Romulans were behind an attack on Vulcan and Captain Pike needed a team to disengage a drill from digging a hole into the planet. Since Sulu had his combat training in swordplay, he volunteered to be one out of three people to space jump on to the drill. Along with Kirk and Olsen, Sulu jumped down and ended up getting attacked by Romulans. Thankfully, he used his fighting skills to make short of the assailants and he and Kirk (Olsen had ended up dying) had to think fast and destroy the drill using enemy firearms.
As the drill began to fall apart, Sulu lost balance and fell off, starting a fast plummet to the surface of Vulcan. Kirk jumped after him and succeeded on grabbing on to him but both men were surprised when Kirk's parachute snapped off and flew away in the wind. With seconds left on the clock, Ensign Chekov, the ship's navigator, came to their rescue by transporting them just before they turned into ground pizza.
Sulu stayed on the bridge for the rest of the crew's long adventure. When it came time to lead an attack on the Romulan vessel, it was Sulu who decided to make a surprise jump in front of the ship to provide cover to Spock (who was piloting the Jellyfish ship at the time). He was made the official helmsman of the Enterprise once Kirk was promoted to Captain and given the five-year-mission to explore space.
