PERSONALITY:
There are many things that can be said about Orions and most of them aren't very pleasant. Sure, their sex trade is thriving, just as the salve trade (though in their case it is pretty much the same thing) \, piracy is abundant, they're infamous for their spies and the fact that well the only thing you can trust them with is...trouble. In otherwise, if there's something doubtfully legal going on you can trust for an Orion to be somehow involved.. Gaila, however, is not most of those things thankfully, though one would probably argue about that last bit of 'trouble' because Gaila does seem to create a bit of mayhem every now and then.
Having been born to a rather influencial Orion family, she had been priviledged with an environment not many Orion clan members could afford and perhaps saved her from becoming the maniupulative, deceitful femme fatal that is the usual and no doubt true stereotype of an Orion female. Thanks to that stroke of luck (or well semi-lack considering her later adventures) her personality was able to develop in a far less survivalist way, making her effectively a loyal and devoted friend.
Her most striking feature, apart from the obvious lack of self-conciousness and shame (lacks that are, let it be said, utterly relative because the Orion traditions does not have ANY hang-ups about sexual activities, whatsoever), is her sense of humour. She's incurably optimistic and would risk life and limb for a good prank. Interestingly enough, this humorous side also has a downside since...she tends to crack inappropriate jokes at inappropriate times. Not to mention her mouth should be washed thoroughly with soap according to some respectable human ladies. Which is why no one in their right might would take her on a diplomatic mission, unless of course she's allowed not to take her pheromone supressers because then, oh baby, she works like a charm. Though the Federation wouldn't probably approve of such...uncanny...solutions.
Apart from being a good laugh, she enjoys a good party and let is be said that some of the wilder escapades during her time in Starfleet were initiated by her very person. You don't know how to party unless you have been to a Gaila party after all. However, it does not mean that all the girl ever thinks about is debauchery (well, okay, she thinks about it A LOT), but she's an avid student and a damn good mechanic and she gets severely annoyed when that little fact is overlooked, due to her bubbly or even ditzy, character.
Generally, she's very friendly (and a little naive), extremely open-minded (if you haven't gotten that one yet) and a good listener. She's very devoted to her friends and fiercely protective of those she considers her 'inner circle', but she's also stubborn, mouthy and gifted with a rather short temper in regards to everything, which sometimes results in a wee bit of violence...as screwdrivers might fly on occassion.
Since most of her nutrition comes from photosynthesis she's not really much of a foodie, which doesn't mean that she can't consume food at all, but Orion's attitute towards eating is comparable to the one humans hold towards public sex and eating is commonly considerate an intimate act in Orion culture. And while Gaila probably will pop under a sunlamp during her lunchbreak, it won't stop her from gobbling down obscene amounts of dessert.
HISTORY:
Once you study Orion history enough, you learn that the popular imagery of the Orion slave trade is a bit of a joke, really. Not a joke as in haha it doesn't really exist ,but a joke as in the roles are actually reversed and the slaves are the ones that enslave, as Orion society is fiercely matriarchal.
It is in order to keep up the façade of male dominance, that Orions sell their females on the slave market that the Federation so strongly disapproves of. Gaila , much like her mother, was an up and coming leader in Orion society and part of a very influential family, with a host of her own slaves, allowed a thorough education in subjects of her own choice and a wide selection of priviledges and freedoms.
Until, that is, she was betrayed by her older sister Talshen and sold onto the slave market. It might have seemed like a 'up shit's creek without a paddle' situation to an innocent by-stander but not to a resourceful Orion girl like Gaila herself. She knew that had Talshen wanted to pernamently dispose of her she would have simply resolved to poison or something more inventive. Selling her was erasing Gaila from Orion's political scene without pangs of guilt. Like most of the females sold into slavery Gaila ended up being the one holding the leash and despite having grown attached to her Master, she eventually convinced him to selling her into freedom. Since returning to Orion would not have been a very smart idea Gaila decided upon Earth. It was fairly neutral, belonged to the Federation and humans were endlessly entertaining. She ended up wandering, working odd jobs (an Orion girl...you do the Maths) and feeling somewhat lost and ostracized. However, she befriended by some kind humans, who eventually convinced her that Starfleet would put her computer skills to good use and give her a chance to see a more positive side of intergalactic relations and eventhough she was skeptical at first but ended up giving it a shot and downright loving it
