"Actives". That's the name given to twenty-six individuals, twenty-six unique people lured to the Alliance under the guise of attending an elite academy, only to have their memories, personality, their very essence erased. New personas are imprinted on the Actives' brains on a daily basis, at the whim of their high-paying clients, and these people are sent out to become lovers, friends, assassins - anything.
They are all confined to a top-secret Alliance facility known as the Dollhouse. Only one Active has ever escaped, before she was entirely conditioned for duty. The resulting mental trauma has driven her mad. She was going to be known as Alpha. Her name is River Tam.
